MACHINE TOOLS
When Two Spindles Are Better Than
One
Machining centers have become
faster, more accurate and less
expensive over the years. The
evolution has led to this common
phenomenon in high-volume
production: plants using banks of
machining centers to make parts that
might otherwise be produced using a
hard-tooled transfer system.

Programming
Feed Rate In Degrees Per Minute
Feed rate for all linear axes can be
specified in per-minute fashion (either inches or millimeters per
minute). For many machines, feed rate can also be specified in
per-revolution fashion (either inches or millimeters per
revolution). This makes feed rate specification easy. But one
constant headache for programmers is that feed rate for most rotary
axes must be specified in degrees per minute.

CUTTING TOOLS
New
Grades Provide Performance Gains In Turning
Kennametal has introduced two new
coated carbide grades that provide dramatic
improvements in cutting speed with no reduction
in tool life while turning gray cast and ductile
irons. Grade KC9325 provides outstanding
performance on gray cast and nodular irons even
under heavy interrupted cut conditions.

THE best steel-turning
grade ever developed
TP1000 is THE best steel-turning
grade ever developed. Period. It
runs faster and it lasts longer. In
hundreds of comparison field tests,
TP1000 produced an average 77% more
parts per corner when compared to
competitive inserts.

METROLOGY
Arm Your Machine Tool With A
Portable CMM
A magnetic base allows the unit to
be mounted right on a machine tool
(see photo at right) or a surface
plate on a close-by inspection
bench. The measuring arm offers
0.0002-inch accuracy, which reflects
the increasing need of shops to hold
“tenths” tolerances.

WEB TECHNIQUES
When is it coming?
"Autonomic computing is not science
fiction," proclaims IBM's Telford.
"This is something that's shipping
today." This is true to a degree.
While there are several examples of
early-stage autonomic systems (see
sidebar "Right here, right now" on
page for details), how long it will
it be before such technologies are
commonplace?
