MACHINE TOOLS

Getting to grips with Graphite

Graphite has, in many instances, replaced copper as the preferred material for the manufacture of electrodes used in EDM die-sink operations. However, graphite particles and residue created during machining operations can result in abrasive wear on a machine tools’ mechanical components – ultimately affecting overall performance.

CUTTING TOOLS

There's no room for compromise in small part machining

The manufacture of small, precision-turned components is a rapidly growing industry, with increasing demand for such parts in medical products, automotive components and IT appliances, to mention just a few. It does not matter that the components are small; their quality, along with the productivity and ultimately the cost efficiency of their manufacture are still vital for success. This is even more true as machine tools become more flexible, and the ability to utilise them to their full capacity calls for equally advanced cutting tools.

ACCESSORIES

Stepped Jaws To Allow Machining On Three Sides Of Each Part

To maximize productivity for its diverse product mix, Parker Hydraulics uses a well-planned high density Kurt workholding system that accommodates many different size manifold blocks in relatively small production runs. Manufactured out of 11L17 and 12L14 steel, ductile iron and aluminum, these manifold blocks are finish machined in several sizes with various configurations of SAE ports, valve cavities and threaded holes, most with precision features.

Versatile work handling devices

Magnetic lifters are versatile work handling devices that can be used to move a variety of ferrous metals ranging from small bundles of rod or scrap to large, heavy blocks. When used to replace slings and chains, lifting magnets can improve overall productivity by allowing a single person to lift a load that may have required two or more people the old way. The trick is to move the load safely, and to do that the equipment needs to be properly specified and applied.

Digital boost to and from Rapid Prototyping

Reverse engineering has come a long way from the days when manufacturers used it to sidestep design and R&D processes and get to market by copying a competitor’s product. What gave reverse engineering respectability was the rise of rapid prototyping. OEMs, manufacturers, fabricators, and service shops were all quick to recognize that reverse engineering speeds up numerous internal processes, particularly rapid prototyping.
