CNC Grinding Cell Cuts Leadtimes

The grinding department at L. H. Carbide (Fort Wayne, Indiana) is no stranger to CNC grinding. But CNC equipment has tended to be under-used here. The shop machines carbide components to accuracies of ±0.0001 inch that are used in the company's complex, progressive stamping dies. Usually these components are machined in such small batches that the company can't justify a large investment in NC programming time.

Grinding Camshafts

Grinding camshafts for North American auto makers is a challenging business — even more challenging if your focus is on new engine launches, such as the reinvented Dodge HEMI, upon which Chrysler has a lot riding. You’ll find the HEMI in the new Dodge Ram, Durango, as well as other soon-to-come vehicles such as the rear wheel drive Chrysler 300C and Dodge Magnum. Camshafts for these vehicles are produced exclusively by Krupp Presta, of Danville, IL.

New and improved ELITE Series II CNC Lathes

Significant upgrades were made to the ELITE 8/51 CNC lathe to make it a more outstanding value in its price range. The ELITE II-8/51 model is now available with the new sub-spindle and x-axis linear glass scale options. The weight of the machine base was increased, along with the addition of a new door design, an improved operator panel and a more robust tailstock.

Automatic Back Spotfacing Tools

ERIX tool saves up to 90% of the manufacturing time on back spotfacing and chamfering operations compared to conventional methods. The patented tool comprises a spindle with a cutter, called a wing, which folds into the spindle recess when the tool passes through the hole in the workpiece. Standard sizes range from 4,5 mm or 3/16" to 69 mm or 2-11/16" hole diameter.

A Lean Enterprise Work In Process

No manufacturer can claim to be a perfectly lean entity. After all, lean manufacturing is a never-ending practice of identifying and eliminating all sources of muda—lean-speak for waste. Companies can complete a wholesale "attitude adjustment," though, in terms of conscientiously hunting that which consumes resources but delivers no value to the customer. Crane Cams (Daytona Beach, Florida) is a good example of a company with this mindset.
