Five-Axis Machining Has Special Workholding Needs
A five-axis machine can be a tremendous resource, yet workholding limitations can diminish its value. Getting the spindle and cutting tool close to the work can be an issue when the worktable gets in the way, for example. A recently-introduced clamping system allows a workpiece to be rigidly clamped while raised up from the surface of the worktable. Moving the workpiece away from the table creates clearance for the spindle nose and cutting tool when the table swivels the workpiece for multi-sided machining, or when the spindle head rotates and swivels to create contours or sculptured surfaces. Without this clearance, the user may be forced to refixture the part or to switch to a longer, less rigid cutting tool.

New production plant for large gears in Friedrichsfeld, Germany
Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) has expanded assembly capacity for large gears at its Friedrichsfeld site. The first expansion stage, the new hall M of the A&D Mechanical Drives (MD) Division, was officially opened on Friday. Gears for marine drives and the cement industry, and extruder gears for the plastics industry will be manufactured here in future in an area covering approximately 6,900 square meters.

High Speed Machining Without The Fast Spindle
Axial chip thinning is a way of “cheating,” sort of, to achieve a higher feed rate. At least it seems like cheating. Under the influence of chip thinning, the chip thickness no longer equals the advance per tooth. Instead, the chip is smaller—meaning the rate of advance per tooth can increase.

Siemens presents innovative CNC technology for the aerospace industry
Complete automation solutions for CNC applications in aeroplane and engine manufacture were the focus of the Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) presentation at the Airtech 2006 in Frankfurt, Germany. The range includes CNC solutions for five-axis simultaneous machining, active oscillation damping functions, and simulation tools for efficient engine production. Siemens A&D also showed, for the first time, a new seven axis transformation for fibre and tape laying applications.
