Desktop 3D Scanner Captures Part Shapes

Scan it. Cut it. That’s the approach many shops would like to take. A new desktop laser scanning system promises to make that a practical reality at low cost. The system allows 3D objects to be digitized so that surface data can be used to create part geometry for toolpath generation. The NextEngine Desktop 3D Scanner from NextEngine Inc. (Santa Monica, California) uses a set of laser “eyes,” digital camera technology and image sensors to capture scan data from multiple, triangulated views. The system’s special software assembles and manipulates the data to create a 3D model suitable for use in a CAM system.

How to Handle Your Heaviest Molds

Moving molds that weigh 30 to 70 tons and more to and from the toolroom can be a chore, not to mention the time and effort the mold change crews spend in struggling to get the molds in and out of the machines. The use of the appropriate wheeled transporter technology offers a new option for moving the largest of molds freely between all areas of the plant.

A Practical Guide To Presetters

Mr. McCarthy is a national sales manager for tool measurement systems with Big Kaiser Precision Tooling (Elk Grove Village, Illinois). The tool measurement devices he helps shops to implement are commonly known as “presetters.” The term may be somewhat misleading, because shops using these devices enjoy a range of benefits even if they don’t literally “preset” their tools. Typically, the most significant of these benefits is saving time at the machining center. As an alternative to using feeler gages and test cuts to determine tool offsets at the machine, using a presetter to perform independent tool measurement away from the machine can free up considerable productive time.
