Trust is the most important part of any relationship. For Ahmedabad-based Magma Machining Pvt Ltd, it is the trust on Haas Automation, the machine tool supplier that helped the company reap rich dividends while manufacturing critical and precise components for aerospace, power and mining sectors.
The foundation of Magma Machining was laid in 2004 by Mr Yogesh Pajni, a man with aim and ambition, with an aim to manufacture and deliver jobs to niche sectors only. Due to lack of enough technological advancements and flexibility in the industry, Mr Pajni initially found it difficult to carry out these kind of jobs. With more than 20 years of experience in CAD/CAM industry, including his starting with HH ELCON and providing consultations to many companies intially, Mr Pajni let his ‘passion of making critical components’ do the talking and has proved by making some specific critical jobs on these machines.
“My experience within the manufacturing industry came handy while carrying out jobs in Magma Machining as I was very much confident of delivering accurate and precise jobs to aerospace, mining and power sectors. Since manufacturing parts for these sectors require accuracy to the core, there was no option but to opt for CNC technology. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is our main client and their first condition is to manufacture components on CNC machines with high accuracy at their end with very less wall thickness to maintain. Committed to meet their expectations, I purchased first CNC machine from Haas in 2004,” Mr Pajni, the Managing Director the company, said.
Magma has highly modernised infrastructure on the shopfloor which includes VMCs, EDM, CAD/CAM softwares, CMM and host of conventional machines. “As of now, we are not exporting any components, but we have been receiving enquiries globally. Players such as Boeing and many other aerospace companies are looking forward for us. We are currently supplying components to ISRO, HAL SU 30 DIV, Alstom Hydro and many others. We are machining various materials like Aluminium6061, Invar, Covar, AISI4340, 17-4PH etc on our infrastructure that includes CNC machining centres, EDMs, CMM, Ultra Cleaning machines, conventional turning/lathe and others,” Mr Pajni said.
Asked about specific criteria behind selecting CNC machines and the company’s decision to zero-in on Haas, Mr Pajni said, “Our aim was to manufacture and deliver high precision machined components for aerospace sector and were looking out for machine that can match these requirements. On conducting detailed technical benchmark with various vendors on components with high tolerances (around 10 microns), we found Haas machines to be matching our requirements perfectly and so we decided to start our relationship with Haas.”
“Apart from fulfilling our demand as far as machine application is concerned, the technical feedback we received from Haas was appreciative. The machines are flexible for machining any component and maintain consistent accuracies. Also, Haas engineers engage with our technical team to work out appropriate machining strategy for new components. This helped us in maintaining trust and building strong relationship with our customers internally and globally,” Mr Pajni said.
While machining components for aerospace segment, vibration should be zero to avoid chattering on assembly areas. For Magma, this criteria was also fulfilled by Haas machines and their clients were satisfied with the kind of work the company is carrying out. This made 17-member Magma team confident of achieving critical machining output and deliver some lustrous jobs. “While machining components for power sector also, we found out that Haas machines can be helpful while achieving accuracy in manufacturing compressor turbine blades specially the flexibility in the tool path generation using high speed machining for good air foil areas were achieved. The fineness we found after using Haas machines completed our motto of delivering precise components to the niche sectors we are working for,” Mr Pajni said.
Currently, the company has three Haas High speed machines and it is happy with the way all the machines are performing. “The after sales service, particularly after Haas set up its factory outlet in Ahmedabad, has been excellent and we have no issues as far as service is concerned. We even get spares within five hours so our machine downtime is minimum,” Mr Pajni said and added that since Magma has developed a very cordial relationship with Haas, it will go for more machines in future.
“Magma is on an expansion spree and we will definitely look for manufacturing components for other sectors though our thrust will be on power, aerospace and mining sectors. Every day we are facing challenges as far as machining is concerned and we hope to get full support and cooperation from Haas in meeting those challenges,” Mr Pajni concluded.
