Rayence, SPAD introduces world's first next-generation detector technology

Rayence, a company specializing in digital X-ray components and materials, presented ' SPAD-GS ' technology to  3D  detectors at the ' International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) 2023 ' , the world's top semiconductor conference. Published a thesis on successful application . When applying the technology, it is possible to develop a  3D  detector with  2.5 times the sensitivity and  at least  4 times the speed compared to existing detectors of the same class . The research results are the result of joint research from 2021 in cooperation with Yonsei University professor Chae Young-chul as part of the pan-governmental life cycle medical device support project. It received great attention at ISSCC by introducing the world's first detector research results using ' SPAD ' digital pixel technology, which will lead the next-generation image sensor market.

SPAD-GS (Global Shutter) technology is a next-generation 3D  detector technology that provides optimal image quality even under low-dose / high-speed drive environments . The ' SPAD ' element amplifies photons (light as particles) so that even when a very fine level of photons enter it is recognized as a very large number of photons. Due to this feature, if the ' SPAD ' digital pixel detector is applied, X-ray images can be acquired even in an extremely low-dose environment, and the detection speed is remarkably fast. ' SPAD ' device is a  3D  image sensor (LiDAR, LiDAR  ) for autonomous vehicles ,  smartphones ,  drones ,  robots, etc.It is considered as the next-generation semiconductor technology used in the world . Rayence is the first in the world to successfully introduce ' SPAD ' digital pixels to detectors that shoot X-ray images .

In addition to this, GS (Global Shutter) technology was applied. This is a technology that obtains high-quality images by eliminating afterimages when a subject moves quickly. By combining ' GS ' technology with ' SPAD ' fast response speed, Rayence has minimized the deterioration of image quality caused by the motion of the subject. In addition, Rayence proved its high technological prowess by solving all of the major barriers to the application of ' SPAD-GS ' technology, such as low robustness (resistance to X-rays),  high power consumption , and  image distortion .

Rayence's next-generation 3D detector technology is expected to be in the limelight in areas where X-ray inspection results must be utilized as high-speed  3D  images . ' C-ARM ', a medical device used for video X-ray shooting during orthopedic surgery, battery / electronic parts inspection where fast image inspection is linked to production cost ,  aviation / nuclear power plant parts inspection market ,  etc. This is the market that has been mostly occupied. Rayence prepares for mass production of next-generation detectors and medical device system products with Yonsei University and Listem, which are joint R&D institutions.

At the ISSCC held in 2020, Rayence also received positive responses by jointly presenting a thesis on large-area high-resolution CMOS X-ray detector technology with Yonsei University . By commercializing the technology announced in 2020, the world 's first 21x21cm one-die CMOS X-ray detector ' MIDAS2121 ' was released. MIDAS2121 has been selected as a next-generation world-class product in  2022 in recognition of its strength in being able to quickly perform video inspections during X-ray inspection of secondary batteries for electric vehicles . Rayence will also quickly start mass production of the new technology announced at  ISSCC 2023 . It plans to lead the high-spec detector market as a technological superlattice by mass-producing it within several years after going through stages such as clinical trials and certification .
